Mamelodi Sundowns will begin the defence of their Absa Premiership title at home to Maritzburg United at Loftus Stadium on Friday, 08 August 2014, kick-off at 20h00.

Sundowns won the league championship for the first time in seven years, ending two points ahead of runners-up Kaizer Chiefs.

The Brazilians recorded 20 wins, five draws and five losses from their 30 matches for a record haul of 65 points.

Their next three league opponents are Ajax Cape Town, Moroka Swallows (both away) and Orlando Pirates (home).

Maritzburg ended the previous season in 10th place, four points adrift of the top half of the table.

The Team of Choice recorded 10 wins, eight draws and 12 defeats for a haul of 38 points.

Their next three league opponents are Polokwane City (home), Bidvest Wits (away) and Chippa United (home).

In head-to-head stats, Sundowns and Maritzburg have met in 16 league matches since 2005/06.

The Brazilians boast 11 wins compared to the Team of Choice’s three, while just two matches have been drawn.

‘Downs have a strong home record against Maritzburg, with six wins and just one defeat from eight matches as hosts.

Last season the teams played to draws in both of their league fixtures: 2-2 in Tshwane and 1-1 in Pietermaritzburg.
