SuperSport United were crowned Telkom Knockout champions in South Africa after beating Platinum Stars 3-2 in the final at Orlando stadium on Saturday.
It was an entertaining game which ended 1-1 after 90 minutes and then produced three goals in 30 minutes of extra-time.
In the 21st minute SuperSport should have been awarded a penalty when Lebogang Manyama was clearly brought down inside the box by Tshepo Gumede, but the referee, to everyone’s surprise, waved away the appeals.
Stars took the lead in the 29th minute when Robert Ng’ambi was played into space inside the box by Mogakolodi Ngele, and he duly fired home from 14-yards out, 1-0.
Stars lead lasted a total of seven minutes, though, with Clayton Daniels pulling Matsatsantsa level from the penalty spot with 36 minutes on the clock after the referee pointed following a foul by Luvolwethu Mpeta on David Mathebula inside the area.
The second 45 was not as entertaining as the first and we only saw a few opportunities in front of goal.
In the 57th minute Ngele came close to giving his side the lead for the second time when his low grass-cutter from just inside the box struck the side-netting.
SuperSport’s best chance of the second half came in the 79th minute when Mathebula played Wome into space, but his shot was straight at the keeper who made a good save.
The game ended 1-1 and went into extra-time.
Daniels completed his brace from the penalty spot in the 103rd minute after Soloman Mathe fouled Thuso Phala inside the area.
Dikwena hit straight back through Ngele who fired a sweetly struck left-footed half volley past Williams a minute later.
Stars were then afforded the opportunity to take the lead on the cusp of first-half stoppage time in extra time after Thabo Moloi handled the ball inside the area. Rodgers stepped up, but was superbly denied by Williams who made an outstanding double save.
Phala restored SuperSport’s lead in the 111th minute with a stunning solo effort.
Phala picked up the ball on the right flank and proceeded to drive into the box, beating two defenders before curling the ball with the outside of his right boot into the corner of the net from 14-yards out, 1-0.
