Township Rollers defeated Botswana Defence Force (BDF) XI 1-0 in a Mascom Top 8 Cup quarter-final second-leg match at the National Stadium on Monday night.
As a result, Rollers booked their place in the semi-finals after winning the tie 3-0 on aggregate, while BDF are eliminated from the competition.
Popa went into the game having secured a 2-0 away victory over Matebele in the first-leg match which was played at the National Stadium a fortnight ago.
Matebele had a chance to break the deadlock 20 minutes into the game when Phenyo Serameng set-up Keeagile Kobe, who forced Rollers goalkeeper Kabelo Dambe into a decent save.
The hosts were able to contain BDF XI until the match referee blew the half-time whistle. The score was 0-0 at the interval with Rollers leading 2-0 on aggregate.
The visitors began the second-half brightly and they should have scored through an unmarked Rashid Mandawa. But he fired over the crossbar from inside the Rollers box.
Letang Kgwengwenyane’s side continued to create goal-scoring opportunities, but they could not convert them as BDF midfielder Bonolo Phuduhudu was also denied by Dambe.
Matebele were left to rue their missed chances as Mthokozisi Msomi scored in the 70th minute when he beat BDF goalkeeper Michael James with a powerful shot.
Ultimately, Rollers emerged 1-0 winners after containing BDF in the latter stages of the game. Segolame Boy, the Rollers winger, was named Man of the Match.
Popa joined Orapa United, Gaborone United and the defending champions Jwaneng Galaxy in the semi-finals.
