Township Rollers’ CAF Champions League preliminary round tie against Sudanese side Al Merrikh cost the club a whopping P430,000.
Rollers first hosted Merrikh in Gaborone and secured a 3-0 win, before losing the return game in Omdurman 2-1 to advance 4-2 on aggregate.
Mmego Online reports that the Botswana Premier League champions expect to spend a similar amount when they face Young Africans of Tanzania in the first round, with the first leg set for Dar Es Salaam on Tuesday, March 6.
It’s a hefty price to pay for competing on the continent, but Popa will be handsomely rewarded in financial terms should they defeat Yanga and become the first Botswana team to qualify for the lucrative group stages of the Champions League.
Rollers will have had little time to enjoy their Mascom Top 8 cup success following Saturday’s final against Orapa United.
Popa travelled back to Gaborone from Francistown on Saturday night and caught an early-morning flight to Johannesburg earlier today.
They will fly to Dar es Salam on Sunday, play on Tuesday and fly back on Wednesday, to continue with a taxing fixture schedule.
